New Hampshire Hunter Safety Practice Test

The ignition of gunpowder occurs when the firing pin strikes the primer. This action creates a small explosion that ignites the gunpowder within the cartridge. The primer is a critical component in the ammunition, as it contains a small quantity of sensitive explosive material. When struck by the firing pin, it produces the necessary energy to ignite the larger charge of gunpowder, which then propels the bullet down the barrel of the firearm.

In this context, the other actions—loading the bullet, releasing the safety, and pulling the trigger—are important steps in the firing process, but they do not directly cause the ignition of the gunpowder. Loading the bullet is about preparing the ammunition, the safety is a mechanism to prevent accidental firing, and pulling the trigger is the action that results in the firing pin striking the primer, but it is the striking of the primer that actually ignites the gunpowder and fires the shot. Thus, the step when the firing pin strikes the primer is the key moment of ignition in the firing sequence.
